Football shows are all the rage on thebest streaming servicesthese days, but before the glamour and relentless optimism ofTed Lassoand the fairytale story ofWelcome to Wrexham, there was a very different kind of show that was must-watch television,
I’m talking aboutSunderland ‘Til I Die,a much bleaker documentary series that lingers betweenThe Thick of itstyle black comedy and Joseph Conrad’sHeart of Darkness. The horror! After a four-year absence (in which time a lot has happened) the documentary series is set to return toNetflixfor its third and final season on February 13th.
So what makesSunderland ‘Til I Diesuch essential viewing? Well with the show starting with the club being relegated from the Premier League, this is a not-so-beautiful look at the beautiful game. With the team expected to be a big fish in a small pond, things don’t exactly get any better from there.
So what can we expect in the third instalment? In the present day, Sunderland have turned their fortunes around and are now a much better-run club that is moving in the right direction. To be honest, after their suffering, it’s the least the fans deserve.
